I never used to have an issue with going to the dentist when I was younger, but after having a number of teeth removed and wearing braces for about three years, I get really anxious whenever I have to go in for exams or cleanings.
One day while browsing my Twitter feed, I came across of photo of Jackie, of fivetwo beauty, getting massaged while getting her teeth cleaned. HUH? Yes! She was getting a hand massage by a masseuse while the hygentist cleaned her teeth. I’d actually have never seen or heard of this so I reached out and asked her what dentist she goes to and she told me Dr. Sonny Torres Oliva.
I did a quick Google search and stumbled upon the website — I quickly learned that everything that they stood for aligned with what I would want in searching for a doctor. They pride themselves in a tranquil, spa-like atmosphere and personalized care (hence, they call him a Zentist) and I’m all about a pretty and tranquil office, especially when my anxiety can get the best of me. I knew that I had to visit the offices of Dr. Oliva to get a first-hand look at what Jackie had experienced and what all the positive reviews on Yelp were raving about so I scheduled an appointment!
After a few back-and-forths with scheduling and even speaking to Dr. Oliva over the phone, I made my way over to Fifth Avenue. For the first time in what seems to be never, I was actually excited to be going to the dentist. Yeah, it was odd. I checked into the front desk, filled out new patient forms, and waited to be called upon. In the short minutes that I was waiting, I experienced Dr. Sonny Torres Oliva sending his patients out of his office with high-fives and hugs — I’ve never seen a doctor interact like that with patients before!
Once called into the back of the office, I had xrays taken and answered a few first patient questions. Dr. Oliva approached and intoduced himself and right away, it felt as if I had known him forever! It must have been his warming attitude and approach but whatever it was calmed my anxiety. He explained that he had scheduled his masseuse for me to massage my hands and feet all while getting my teeth cleaned by the hygentist! I was even more excited by this time and was ushered into one of the rooms.
Instead of the usual reclining chairs that you see in dental offices was a table draped in blankets, very similar to the ones you’d actually see in a spa! I situated myself on the table and Dorota, my hygentist, explained what was happening every step of the way. An eye pillow was placed over my eyes and after a few inhales of lavendar essential oil, the cleaning and massage began! The massage really helped take my mind off of the thorough cleaning Dorota was giving my teeth. Even after the cleaning was over, Dorota massaged my gums.. which I’ve never had done during a cleaning but it was nice especially after a cleaning. Dr. Oliva returned to the room and we chatted about some next steps in regards to my teeth. My teeth have always been a problem and it seems as though I will have to continue working towards a solution but Dr. Oliva was optimistic and while I called my teeth a problem, he referred to them as “situations”, not problems. I left the office with a goodie bag of dental treats (ie floss, tooth brush & paste, and mouth wash ) and a $10 giftcard for checking into the office through Facebook! Such a neat incentive for all of the patients!
I highly recommend Dr. Sonny Torres Oliva if you’re in search of a dentist in the New York City area! His staff are very friendly and professional but of course, the real star is the doctor himself. He seems to build relationships with each of his patients which can be hard to come by in other dental offices. If you do decide to visit Dr. Sonny Torres Oliva, let him know I sent you — he’ll be thrilled 🙂
